Lighting guide

The table lamp sizing rule that makes a room feel finished.

A quick decorator formula for choosing bedside, console and side-table lamps that look intentional instead of random.

Get the formula

A quick sizing guide for choosing lamps that look intentional on nightstands, consoles and side tables.

HeightMost side-table lamps work best around 24–32 inches tall; small bedside lamps can sit lower if the shade lands near eye level.
Shade widthKeep the shade roughly 1/2 to 2/3 the width of the table so it feels generous without swallowing the surface.
WarmthUse warm bulbs around 2700K for evening rooms. Bright cool bulbs make cozy decor look weirdly clinical.

The simple formula

Table height + lamp height should create a shade center close to seated eye level. For a sofa side table, that usually means a lamp in the 24–30 inch range. For a nightstand, check it from bed: the shade should protect your eyes from bare bulb glare.

What to avoid

Tiny lamps on big tables, cool white bulbs in warm rooms, and shades so narrow they look like afterthoughts. If the lamp has a sculptural base, keep the surrounding styling calmer.

Quick checklist

  • Shade bottom near eye level when seated/lying down.
  • Shade width feels proportional to the table.
  • Base has enough visual weight for the room.
  • Bulb temperature is warm, not blue-white.
